What Are the Different Types of Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a highly personalized procedure that offers various options for women seeking fuller breasts and a shapelier figure. Patients may be able to enhance breast volume with breast implants, fat transfer, or by combining a breast augmentation with a breast lift. Choosing the right option can be difficult. This blog will explain the different types of breast augmentation offered at Le Contour Aesthetic Surgery so you can feel confident about your procedure.

During your consultation, Dr. Gonzalez will carefully evaluate your breasts to see which approach best complements your anatomy, desired size, and existing breast tissue.

Breast Augmentation With Breast Implants

Breast implants are a common approach for breast enhancement, and choosing a type of implant is only the beginning of the decision-making process. Each offers distinct benefits.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants have an enduring silicone outer shell that is filled with sterile saltwater. Incisions are smaller because the implants are inserted before they are filled, allowing Dr. Gonzalez to adjust the amount of fluid during surgery to correct unevenness.

Saline implants are more susceptible to rippling than silicone implants; however, if a breast implant ruptures, it is easily detected because it visibly deflates, and the body safely absorbs the saltwater. Saline implants usually cost less than silicone implants, which makes them more accessible to patients.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants also have a silicone outer shell, but they are filled with silicone gel rather than saline. This option is designed to mimic the feel and density of natural breast tissue. Additionally, silicone breast implants are less prone to visible rippling beneath the skin and hold their shape better over time.

Gummy Bear Breast Implants

Gummy bear implants are a type of silicone breast implant made with a more highly cohesive silicone gel. The gel’s durability helps maintain its natural teardrop shape and provides a natural slope. The breasts imitate the gentle upper-pole fullness and lower projection of natural breasts. Gummy bear implants also have zero leakage due to the thick inner gel, and there’s a lower risk of rippling compared to traditional breast implants.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation

Breast implants are not the only way to add volume. Fat transfer breast augmentation uses liposuction to remove fat from another area of the patient’s body. The harvested fat is then prepared and injected into the breasts to enhance their size and shape.

Because fat transfer uses a patient’s own tissue rather than breast implants, it offers a distinctively different approach to breast augmentation. With fat transfer, breasts tend to feel softer and more natural because the tissue is autologous, and patients can also slim the donor area with liposuction. Implant complications, such as a rupture or a capsular contracture, are eliminated since no foreign material is used, and patients are happy to know that there’s minimal scarring involved in fat transfer breast augmentation.

Patients must have enough donor fat available to accomplish their treatment goals.

Which Type of Breast Augmentation Is Right for Me?

Choosing the right breast augmentation technique involves more than deciding between breast implants and fat transfer. Your treatment plan can also be customized by implant shape, incision location, implant placement, and other factors that influence your final breast augmentation results. Dr. Gonzalez considers your existing anatomy, desired breast shape, and goals for projection and fullness.

Some of the choices that may be discussed during your consultation include:

  • Implant shape: Round implants provide greater fullness, while teardrop-shaped implants are designed to follow the natural contour of the breasts.
  • Incision location: Dr. Gonzalez may use an inframammary incision beneath the breast crease, a periareolar incision around the areola, or a transaxillary incision within the armpit.
  • Implant placement: Submuscular placement is generally performed, meaning the implant is positioned beneath the pectoral muscle.
  • Combining breast augmentation with a breast lift: Patients who want to address volume and sagging breasts may benefit from combining breast augmentation with a breast lift.

Dr. Gonzalez can walk you through these options and develop a surgical plan tailored to you.
